Photos: ODOT groundbreaking ceremony for the Hwy 101 pedestrian underpass

Federal, state and local officials gathered April 5 with ceremonial shovels in hand to break ground for the US 101 pedestrian underpass, a vital piece of the Fort-to-Sea Trail.

ODOT has installed new signs that will make it easier for visitors to find the Fort to Sea Trail trailheads and all of the other sites in the new Lewis and Clark National Historical Park.

Park Superintendent Chip Jenkins reflects on the triumphs of the Corps of Discovery reaching their goal nearly 200 years prior.

ODOT Director Bruce Warner credits the unique partnership of federal, state, county, city and private groups for getting this project underway.

DEA CEO Ken Wightman, and descendant of Corps of
Discovery member Alexander Willard wonders if he might uncover one of his ancestor's artifacts.

ODOT Region 2 Manager Jeff Scheick congratulates the Astoria ODOT Team for
    the new directional signs.

Chip Jenkins gets caught (once again) laughing at own joke.

Chip pauses for a moment to admire the work of ODOT's sign crew.
